How To Clear Tampers on Qolsys System

How To Clear Tampers on Qolsys System

If you’ve ever seen a “tamper” warning pop up on your Qolsys security system, you’re not alone. It’s a common issue that many homeowners and business owners encounter, especially during installation, when replacing batteries, or even just adjusting the panel or sensor position. These alerts are your system’s way of saying that something has been opened, moved, or disturbed — and until it’s addressed, your system may refuse to arm or function properly. While the warning can seem a bit intimidating at first, the good news is that it’s usually an easy fix that you can handle yourself with just a little guidance.

Understanding what a tamper alert is and how to resolve it can save you a lot of time and potentially even a service call. That’s why we created this guide to help you confidently clear tamper messages on your Qolsys system. These steps apply to the IQ Panel 2, IQ Panel 4, secondary keypads, and individual sensors. Whether you’re troubleshooting during an installation or your system has unexpectedly thrown a tamper alert at you, this step-by-step walkthrough will show you exactly what to do.

What is a Tamper Alert?

A tamper alert is your system shouting “Hey, someone just messed with me!” It’s triggered when the cover of a panel, keypad, or sensor is removed or isn’t seated correctly. This is done through a small button or spring inside that is released upon the opening of many security devices. Although a great safety feature, the alert can be a bit confusing if unexpected.

Tamper alerts are not emergencies; however, they will prevent a security system from fully arming until cleared. Because of this, it is best to resolve them as soon as possible.

A tamper message with the Qolsys IQ Panel 2 often means the backplate is not fully secured or the tamper button on the back is not being pressed correctly.

Step-by-step fix:
    1. Gently remove the panel from the wall to access the back.
    2. Locate the small black tamper switch on the bottom-left side of the back of the panel.
    3. Reattach the backplate securely, making certain it presses that black button down.
    4. Once secured, the tamper alert should disappear.
    5. To confirm, you can request a system refresh through Alarm.com or your mobile app by updating the equipment list.

Tip: If the panel tamper message doesn’t disappear immediately, wait a minute or two and ensure the backplate is securely attached. A quick panel reboot might do the trick.

IQ Panel 4: How to Clear a Tamper

The Qolsys IQ Panel 4 has a very similar setup, but the tamper button is in a slightly different location — the bottom-right side on the back.

Here’s how to clear it:
    1. Remove the panel from the mounting bracket.
    2. Find the black tamper switch on the bottom right.
    3. Carefully reattach the backplate so that it presses the tamper switch.
    4. Watch for the panel to recognize that the tamper is restored.
    5. If needed, request a sensor list update through Alarm.com to clear the warning.

You can also choose to disable panel tamper detection if you’re working on the panel often and want to avoid unnecessary alerts. Just go to:
      • Settings > Advanced Settings > Installer Code > Installation > Security and Arming > Panel Tamper
Then uncheck the setting to disable it temporarily.

Secondary Keypads (IQ Remote): Clearing Tamper Warnings

If you have a secondary keypad like the IQ Remote, it also has a built-in tamper switch — typically a spring-loaded pin or pressure switch that presses against the wall or desk mount.

To clear tamper:
    1. Remove the keypad from its mount.
    2. Inspect the tamper spring or pin: it may be stuck or have poor contact.
    3. Clean off any dust or debris and verify the spring isn’t damaged.
    4. Re-seat the keypad securely against the mount or table stand, pressing firmly until you hear a soft click.

The tamper warning should clear on its own within a minute or two once the panel detects that the switch is engaged.

Sensors: How to Clear Tamper Warnings

Door/window contacts, motion detectors, and other sensors also have tamper features. These alerts may appear after installation, battery changes, or a sensor being knocked loose.

Here’s what to do:
    1. Open the sensor casing carefully (usually using a small screwdriver).
    2. Locate the tamper switch — a spring, button, or lever.
    3. Confirm the tamper isn’t stuck or dislodged.
    4. Close the casing tightly, ensuring it clicks into place and fully presses the tamper switch.
    5. Again, request a sensor list update through Alarm.com if the alert doesn’t clear automatically.

Pro tip: If you’re getting repeat tamper alerts from a sensor, try using a stronger adhesive or mounting screws to keep it firmly in place.

Refreshing the System on Alarm.com

After fixing any tamper issues, it’s a good idea to refresh your system’s sensor list through the Alarm.com app or web portal. This makes certain the panel updates its status and clears any leftover trouble conditions.

    • Go to your system or equipment section.
    • Tap or click “Refresh” or “Update Equipment List.”
    • The panel should sync and show all devices in their proper state.
