24 Mar How to Set Up Business Video Analytics on Alarm.com
Modern security is no longer just about cameras recording footage. Business Video Analytics allows security systems to detect important activity, monitor operations, and provide valuable insights about how people move through your business. With Business Video Analytics on Alarm.com, cameras can identify meaningful events, reduce false alerts, and help business owners improve both security and operations. Instead of simply recording everything, the system focuses on meaningful events and sends alerts when something important happens.
In this guide, we will explain how to set up Business Video Analytics on your Alarm.com system and how it can improve your day-to-day security.
What Business Video Analytics Does for Your Business
Business Video Analytics uses smart detection rules to recognize meaningful activity instead of recording everything. You can set zones or virtual boundaries that trigger alerts when someone enters a restricted area, approaches a door, or moves through a space after hours.
From a business owner’s perspective, this means your cameras stop being passive recorders and start acting like proactive security tools.
Key Features That Help Protect Your Business
Business Video Analytics provides several powerful features designed to improve both security and operational awareness.
- Intrusion Detection: Detection zones can be placed around entry points, storage rooms, offices, or delivery areas. If someone enters a restricted space or moves through an area after hours, the system sends a real-time alert so you can respond quickly.
- Smarter Video Surveillance: Instead of reviewing hours of recordings, analytics cameras capture and organize only important events. Clips are automatically categorized so you can quickly find the footage you need when reviewing an incident.
- Access Control Visibility: Video analytics can work alongside your access control system to show what happens around doors and restricted areas. This helps managers verify employee access, deliveries, and after-hours activity.
- Energy Management Support: Analytics can also trigger building automation features. For example, lights can turn on when motion is detected or systems can adjust when areas are empty. This helps reduce energy waste while maintaining security.

Business Activity Analytics Rule Types
Alarm.com Business Activity Analytics includes several rule types that help businesses understand customer behavior, monitor occupancy, and improve operations. These analytics tools collect real data about how people move through your space.
Here are the five main BAA rule types available in Alarm.com.
- Heat Mapping: The system collects activity data inside a selected monitoring zone and displays it as a visual heat map. Areas with the most activity appear in warmer colors like red, while areas with less traffic appear in cooler colors like blue.
- Occupancy + People Counting: This rule uses bidirectional tripwires to track when people enter and exit a location. The system then calculates the total number of people currently inside the monitored space.
- People Counting: Using virtual tripwires, the system counts how many people cross a designated line. This data can be tracked daily, weekly, or monthly.
- Crowd Gathering: Instead of tracking entrances and exits, this rule focuses on the number of people present in a specific area at the same time.
- Queue Monitoring: Helps businesses understand how long customers wait in line and the average time customers spend waiting.
How Customers Can Set Up Video Analytics
Once your cameras support analytics, you can configure everything directly from your Alarm.com account in just a few steps. The platform allows you to create smart detection rules, draw monitoring zones, and customize alerts based on your business hours and security needs. This means you stay in control of how your cameras respond to activity, helping you receive meaningful notifications instead of constant motion alerts.
Note: Place the camera at an elevated height so that it can be angled downwards on areas of interest. The camera angle should not exceed 60 degrees.

Turning Your Cameras Into a Business Management Tool
With Business Video Analytics from Alarm.com, your cameras do more than simply record what happens on your property. They become an active part of how you protect, monitor, and manage your business each day.
When analytics are configured to match your operations, your system can:
- Send real-time alerts when unusual or suspicious activity occurs
- Capture clear, organized video clips that make incident review faster and easier
- Support employee accountability by providing visibility into key areas
- Trigger automation, such as lighting adjustments to improve safety and reduce energy costs
- Allow you to monitor multiple locations from one dashboard, even when you are off-site
